An emeritus academic describes more episodes in the rural West, educational plateaus, years of involvement overseas, dynamics of university life, work for social justice, spiritual quest and challenges of aging.

Abstract:
An emeritus academic renders a third account of life and times in many lands. Early days on the Dakota prairie precede years on the land in rural Idaho. Higher education brings opportunities in foreign trade and voluntary agency work, taking the author and family members on multiple assignments abroad.

Studies in Idaho, Arizona and South Africa lead to a university career of nearly three decades, embracing work in rural development and exports enhancement in Washington State and around the world. Extended overseas residence brings ample exposure to cultures and settings in Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.

  Evocative portraits , 10/01/2013
Reviewer: Claire Youmans
Full disclosure: David Youmans is my uncle, and a darned good one. He's a pretty fine writer, too, as this third collection of memoirs, essays and portraits demonstrates. David's impressive background and world travels allow him to give the reader insights into cultures as diverse as the American prairies and the savannas of Africa through the fascinating changes and challenges of the 20th and 21st centuries. I love the descriptions of the natural environments, both urban and rural. There is a lovely sense of place: one can fully sense the wonderful locations he describes, fell, the heat of the sun or the frigid north, smell the dust, hear the street vendors cry, or the crickets chirp or the wind howl. As always, my favorite parts are the portraits of people. The writing evokes character and heart, time and place, and people I enjoy meeting through David's eyes, even if some of them I knew myself. I hope there are plans for another volume.

Wonderful stories from a world traveler , 02/03/2014
Reviewer: Preston Parsons
David has been a client of mine for some time. He and his wife Julia have shared stories of their travels that took them to many countries across the world (40+ if I remember correctly). The short stories from his travels found in this book are so interesting. David's writings paint a vivid picture of the cultures and people that he has encountered. I highly recommend this book as the stories are informative and touching to the soul.
