General Grant decided to give the command to cut the road from Young’s Point to Bower’s Landing on May 3, 1863.
Confederate Jefferson Davis was under heavy political pressure to help capture Pemberton and his forty-thousand men army in Vicksburg.
It was on June 6th, that the Confederates attacked the Federals at Milliken’s Bend and marched towards Richmond. The Federals had been watching the Confederate activity. They thought that an attack would be immediate.
