The final victory for the Vicksburg campaign started at the end of March 1863, at Milliken’s Bend, Louisiana. General Grant marched forty-thousand troops divided into three garrisons under the command of McClern, Sherman and McPherson, to Hard Times Landing, Louisiana. The troops were shipped to Bruinsburg by a ship that had run past the port earlier. This is where the first battle of this campaign was fought at Port Gibson. This was an easy victory for the Union to win. General Grant decided that his troops would break off from the supply lines and survive on the remaining rations and the land.
