Review Of Ghosts In The Tree Line , 05/15/2010
Reviewer: Danielle Kreeger
This one of the most exciting books I’ve ever read, each word, and each phrase was chosen for it’s impact and descriptive nature. My father was in Viet Nam, and while he seldom talks about his experiences, this book gave me an insight as to what actually went on in a soldier’s head, and it’s not what we see in the movies. The book is rather short, perfect for the beach or airline flight, and I tell you, once I began the book, I could not put it down.

I thought this would be just another war novel, but it was so much more, on so many more levels. Reading this was like watching a series of small movies.

I freely admit to being of the age that Vietnam factored largely in the making of who I am, even though I didn't serve in uniform. Captain Kesler paints vivid word pictures of what it must have been like to slog through the jungle, completely aware of every nuance that may spell danger or death, like the sound of raindrops on ponchos. Facing the strangeness of a different type of combat, immersed in a strange world but with ties to the familiar one, well, this quick read will make you feel as though you are there, and if you were, it will no doubt take you eerily back. A quick primer on the experience for those who feel the need for a first taste, but to those who were there, you will find words to help describe your experience to others.
