Abstract:
Clinical investigators have face-to-face contact with normal and patient volunteers; together, they work to solve medical mysteries. This book provides a personal perspective about the partnership that develops to gain knowledge necessary to treat medical illnesses. Patients suffering from obesity, diabetic ketoacidosis and cirrhosis were among the participants in our studies. Brief descriptions of biomedical sciences are included, linking data collected from urine and blood with metabolism that occurs in brain, liver, kidney, muscle and adipose tissue. Fundamentals of total body energy requirements are related to body composition.

The diminishing number of clinical investigators threatens advancement of health care.
