Abstract:
The transition from the old world to the new one was far more complicated than a boat ride across the Atlantic, as language, culture, social norms, and personal expectations all underwent radical changes. Like many immigrants from Eastern Europe, Abe Braverman learned to cope with prejudice, people, and events that were beyond his control. Providing for his family often meant bending the rules of society and tradition. So, he made his living as best he could - as both a shoemaker and a bookmaker. He married the only woman he would ever love. And he kept a secret that would divide his family forever.
