Abstract:
This is a story about two white female police officers who worked as partners in the city of Detroit. I was one of them. My partner and I were involved in a police shooting in January of 1996, an incident where fellow officer Patrick Prohm was fatally shot. My partner and I thought the incident was traumatic enough. Wait until you see what came after it. Donna,
Your story in Shattered Badges, Broken Hearts, and mine in Badge 3483, A True Story, have great similarities, down to almost the exact same words Dr. Schiener said to me in 1988. You have given civilians an eye opener to what the department can be like.
I was fortunate to have the support of the union, which helped immensely. Thank you for telling your story. I don't know if "enjoyed" is the word people would use for reading your book or mine, but they will certainly be enlightened, and know the truth. Your book should be required reading before anyone joins any police academy.
Sincerely,
J. Charlene Genther
