Alex was just a baby penguin when he was whisked away from his home in the Cincinnati Zoo. He and two adult penguins, Sundae and Shy, were marched into airplane carriers and loaded onto an airplane. Flying was very scary for these ground birds that could not fly on their own. In Binghamton, zoo keepers from the Ross Park Zoo whooped with joy as they met the plane carrying the new birds. They carefully set the carriers in the Zoomobile and headed for the penguins' new home. Alex was so tired and sleepy, he hardly noticed where he was. The penguins were placed in a big enclosure inside a building. Only the zoo staffs were allowed near them. The birds were happy to be in a quiet place away from the strange, frightening noises of an airplane. They waddled around standing upright. UPRIGHT! They could do this because their short, strong little legs were set way back on their bodies. They splashed in the wading pool and became acquainted with the zoo keepers. Soon three more adult penguins from a zoo in Wisconsin joined them. They were Arthur, Izzy and Violet. At first young Alex was happy frolicking all by himself in this wonderful, new playground. Then he noticed that he was always playing alone.
