Elizabeth Welsh was born in New York City. Her mother was a homemaker and her father worked in publishing. She attended public high school near her home, and then went off to Boston for college. At a Harvard-Princeton football game, she met her future husband. They married, moved to Philadelphia and had two sons. The boys still live on the East Coast and Mrs. Welsh lives in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.
