I just finished reading my signed copy of "The Wake" today. When Nancy Black, Gary's wife, asked me earlier in the week what I thought, my response was" a bit disturbing". As I progressed deeper into the book, it was incredibly disturbing. This book is fiction, but as most fiction is based on events that occurred or are likely to occur. Reading this, the realization of how frequently we fail to protect the most vulnerable. The elderly are especially susceptible due to distance either physically or emotionally from family. Loneliness creates a void and opens an easy door for "wolves in sheep's clothing". This is an important read, especially for healthcare workers, but I also recommend it for everyone. Gary is an artist, not only on a canvas, but also with words. The picture painted is clear and disturbing. May it be a call for us to care for the widows, widowers, and orphans.
