This suspense filled book takes you on a detailed historical journey about earning and living the American dream, and then it carefully shocks you with an inside view of evil, greedy predators taking it all away. The story gives you an intense, harsh reality of elder abuse, neglect and exploitation that no elderly person should have to endure. It has a dramatic conclusion too. Monique Feliciano

  Wolves in Sheep's Clothing , 07/30/2015
Reviewer: Sharon Alton Hansen
I just finished reading my signed copy of "The Wake" today. When Nancy Black, Gary's wife, asked me earlier in the week what I thought, my response was" a bit disturbing". As I progressed deeper into the book, it was incredibly disturbing. This book is fiction, but as most fiction is based on events that occurred or are likely to occur. Reading this, the realization of how frequently we fail to protect the most vulnerable. The elderly are especially susceptible due to distance either physically or emotionally from family. Loneliness creates a void and opens an easy door for "wolves in sheep's clothing". This is an important read, especially for healthcare workers, but I also recommend it for everyone. Gary is an artist, not only on a canvas, but also with words. The picture painted is clear and disturbing. May it be a call for us to care for the widows, widowers, and orphans.

  A frightening look into a shameful crime , 07/31/2015
Reviewer: Techtoo
Gary Black writes about a particularly frightening form of abuse common throughout this country. Elder abuse, whether perpetrated by an unskilled aid in a nursing home or a family member in their own home costs this country over 5 billion dollars a year in additional medical care. Though I knew the subject matter of the book, its first chapters detailing life in Hungary and here in the U.S. were interesting as well as enjoyable. Life was good and everything was going well for Lazlo and his family. I imagine everyone has seen a loved one become distant and even angry as they age and their life is changed by medical issues and loss of friends and family. Routines they built up over decades crumble and their lives are turned upside down. This book shows a side of humanity that is waiting in the wings to take advantage of these unsuspecting victims. Either for money or just cruel and sick enjoyment the perpetrators are often able to hurt these people, physically and/or financially without ever being caught. As Lazlo becomes increasingly unhappy and distant from his family he is the perfect victim of this terrible crime against the elderly. This book focuses on an awful situation that has only increased as our aging population grows larger and is living longer, much of it in nursing homes.

So many twists and turns that I would have never guessed the ending. It really makes you think about how our elderly generation should be looked after. A must read for sure!

  It's a Winner! , 02/05/2016
Reviewer: Jeannine Gila
Conclusion which the reader's will not see coming until it is far too late. Gary Black has once again turned out a winner! Weaving a tale beginning "back in the olden days" into a journey creeping into just about every baby boomers' new millennial life, he creates a heartbreaking story which the reader's will not see unfolding until the very end. Give it a read; it is not at all what you are expecting but most definitely should have known. See books by Gary Black Gyroscope: A Survival of Sepsis
