We can all see something of ourselves in this book. Rare is the person who hasn’t stepped into a relationship that looked right on the outside, only to find a catastrophe lurking inside. It happens to the best of us, and Jennifer Monahan is one of the best. She is well-educated and comes from a stable family—her parents celebrated 55 years of marriage the year Jennifer started writing this book. Her twin sister has been married to the same man since 1984. Perhaps it was only Jennifer’s taste for adventure that steered her into some matrimonial box canyons. And adventures she had . . . adventures to die for. Who wouldn’t fall for a tall, handsome cowboy? Or a guitarist with the inside line on some of music’s biggest names? Or—after a seven-year hiatus seeking Knowledge—a fellow seeker? Some of us just go for it—leap first, ask questions later, and sometimes live to regret it. But we grow, and we learn, as Jennifer did. My First Three Husbands is a chronicle of twists and surprises few of us are heir to. She rounds out her narratives with lessons taken from each failed marriage. Best of all, like any good fairy tale, this one has its own prince charming and a very happy ending. My First Three Husbands is a quick and highly rewarding read.
