Abstract:
Mary Lightfine takes on the greatest challenge of her life when she lands in the midst of an African war zone. In this compelling true story Mary narrowly escapes an attempted kidnapping at gunpoint, death threats and the wiles of a lecherous pilot, as she struggles to help the masses caught in the middle of Somalia’s civil conflict. Find out how to instill hope in a homeless man by giving him a bath, how to save your colleague from man-eating sharks, and what to do when you find a bomb in your patient’s bed. An exciting, entertaining and inspiring read.

This review is from: Nurses, Nomads and Warlords: Extreme Medicine, Surviving Somalia (Kindle Edition)
Nurses, Nomads and Warlords: Extreme Medicine, Surviving Somalia is a tremendously personal inside view of going to the most dangerous and difficult setting, providing humanitarian health care to those innocents caught in the crossfire of war. Mary Lightfine is a nurse that fully deserves the title and calling of a Nurse, Florence Nightingale would be proud!! Reading what it costs those who go to these areas, fills me with awe. She shares glimpses of her early life and how this helps her to cope and give, even though it hurts. That and the wisdom she learned from her father, are an inspiration. Anyone with a compassionate heart, will be touched profoundly reading this book. It should be required reading for all nurses, and student nurses. Mary grew up in our area of NJ, and I am happy and proud to say that I knew her when we were young. I believe she was also in a photo in Life Magazine, regarding medical relief work in Bosnia. I highly recommend this book. Her dad Bob's suggestions for living, given at the end of the book, are worth the price of the book. Great job Mary!!
