Category/Subject: BIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY / General

A gripping and thoughtful memoir of bi-gender sexual abuse and how it destroyed more than one family.

Abstract:
All they ever wanted was an apology. Abused as children at the hands of an alcoholic stepfather, the perpetrator escaped justice. If the crimes had been validated, then their nightmares might have ended. Victor Morgan, between 1968 and 1974, sexually abused my ex-wife along with four sisters, and one brother. After years of alcohol and drug abuse, both she and her brother died within days of each other in January 2004. This powerful memoir draws from surviving sister and family interviews, and shows the Penn State scandal is not an isolated tragedy.

Moose's Children tells the story of a downward spiral into alcoholism as a byproduct of childhood abuse from the point of view of friends and family. Each person, including husband and daughter shares their own personal story of the interaction or lack thereof around this loved one. It is a true story and is full of nuggets of wisdom and insights. It seems it would be helpful to families whose loved ones choose alcohol or drugs to mask their pain. David Mokotoff has done a great service by having the courage to bring the skeletons out of the closet in hopes of helping others and facing his own challenges at the same time.

Riveting. A compelling read. The first book in a very long time that I wanted to re-read immediately upon completion. (And I did) Coming from a dysfunctional family background, I have read many a self-help book about this topic. It was refreshing to hear a first hand account of the effects of parental abusive behavior on the “normal” family members. Thank you David for you persistence, candor, honestly, and openness with regards to you and your daughter Emily’s personal lives.

The story of a beautiful and gifted woman who slowly and inexorably falls into the abyss of alcoholism, and her ex-husband’s relentless effort to solve the mystery that causes it. A must-read for anyone trying to understand the nightmare of child sex abuse and the demons it can set upon the human soul.
