Abstract:
This story is the life and loves of the Buckners in the Civil War. When 20 and fast with a gun, Jeff acquires a Texas ranch. Jeff won’t sell and a railroad group hires men to kill him; Jeff retaliates. A brazen medical woman seduces Jeff. She lives with him periodically, but won’t marry him. Jeff’s nephews, Tom and Gene grow up fast guns. Tom can play the piano like a concert virtuoso. They play Honky Tonk music in taverns and get into gunfights. They fall in love with two young dance-hall prostitutes. The girls love them, but won’t marry them.
