Abstract:
I call [these stories] “God Stories” because God figures in them, sometimes as a character. It is my impression that the concept of God is not popular these days in fiction—it is okay to write non-fiction about one’s personal conversion or beliefs, as Anne Lamott did, for example, in Traveling Mercies, and very gutsy of her too, I think—but not as okay to suggest that God is a useful and pretty casual participant in one’s actual life....
