One of the greatest books I've ever read. Motivational as well as inspiring. The author does an excellent job placing you in her shoes, evoking feelings as if you were the main character, you'll laugh, cry, become angry, and laugh all over again. This book can save someone's life. A book you'll have a hard time putting down. You won't want to stop until it's finished! I recommend to ALL.

This is a very open, graphic book on a persons life that takes the reader through..and into the darkest parts...and high with the lightest parts..:: I have never read such descriptive moments to the point that I could actually smell the air she walked through... feel the darkness surrounding.I could see the outlines of her thoughts.....:: Takes a few pages to get into the rhythm of it..but once past and into ..you will not want to leave..I give a high five for the courage it took to write this book... would make a great movie ....!

I would like to first start off by saying thank you to the author. I would like to thank her for more than one reason. First, I'd like to thank her for having the strength and the courage to share such personal and intimate details of her life. Id like to thank her for dedicating a portion of her memior to my grandmother referred to as Tulsa in the book. Janell Ra enabled to not only remember Tulsa, but feel, her smell her, in a way that I'd forgotten she ever existed. With this book she's broken the generational curse of keeping the dark secrets families all to often refuse to acknowledge. She's given others the strength to follow your her lead while closing a very painful chapter of her own life. I applaud her, I am so very proud to know her, and lucky that a person that has exhibited such power has ever placed footprints on my life.......

Reviewer: Paducah Teacher
I stumbled across this book while looking online for another book. Out of pure interest I purchased this book and within the first few pages I was drawn into this woman's world. By day three I had finished and now I'm wanting to meet this survivor in person. I was captivated by her vivid details. Although the title fits the book perfectly it is only a matter of time before the name Janell Ra is on the tongues of everybody. I cant wait to read more from this up and coming author. She is truly gifted! I'm glad to say that I've read this book as soon as I did, because it hasn't been out long. Wait til the world gets a hold of this.

  Interesting , 09/06/2011
Reviewer: Reiko
I found the book to be interesting in some parts and others, I found it to be a long drawn out story. It made me laugh and cry, but there was many sessions that took to long to get the point across. The book carried many stories that most of us have experienced in our lives or through the lives of our love ones. It took me a while to finish it because there were entirely too many redundant statements that made me lose interest. I do admire the author's courage to put her life journey on paper, and I hope she continues. Because my feedback on the book should not enhances no ones objective. I salute her on her success....

I heard so much talk about this book so I borrowed it from a friend and by no means am I a reader; but I read this book. If there ever was a woman that had me mute ESPN it would be Janell Ra. I've only seen her from a distance but now I want to embrace her for being so bold, I want to take care of her. I'm giving this book back to the owner and I'm going to buy my own. Perhaps I can speak to Janell herself and have it autographed. I been in the prescence of greatness all these years and never knew it; but then again there was always something about her that was different. Her Gracefulness! I love this book!

I met this author back in grade school way back in the mid 80's Lane Elementary Louisville,Ky. I remember her long thick ponytails and and now I see her on the cover of a book with a smokin fro. She was always writing then and I see her writing is taking her straight to where she belongs, stardom. A Clock Hangs in Hell made me a grown man cry, because it stirred up secrets in my own life that I've kept hidden. I'm a successful businessman now with a wife and child whom I adore greatly but I would welcome the opportunity to have Janell in my home to meet my family. Will she remember me? I doubt it but how can I ever forget the only girl with ponytails that has ever put me out of not one game but every dodgeball game at recess. Congratulations!

  A white woman's view , 09/15/2011
Reviewer: Samantha
I am a white woman that has been married to an African American man for the past 13 years. I will be honest I was was drawn to this book first by the cover photo then by the title. I want to make what could be a long story very short. Reading this book gave me a better insight about the internal struggles of African American women. This is only one womans story; I can only imagine the heartache she must have went through in reliving it all again while writing this book. Personally I feel she has opened up a "Vault" so to speak in some of the things that she touched base upon; and the fact that she tied in her own experiences of the 9/11 attacks was awe inspiring. I loved the book so much I have my husband reading it. This is only her beginning...this book will open doors for sure.

Reviewer: Natalie
Loved the book, but this can't be the end. Is she alive, or dead; she can't leave readers hanging on. She has to be working on what happened next. I'm apart of her life now. I want to know how her relationship is now with Dane, Florene, Bishop etc. What about Iris, and Gabriel oh there is so much more! This is what folks gossip about; Ms. Janell just took it to that upper level that us weaker folks dare not to. I want more, I just love it.

A great read. My husband and I read the entire book; then I personally went back and read parts that made me cry and I cried again. I cried for her. My husband and I both discussed this book and since we've become alot closer; and I like to give thanks to Janell for that. We all have our own experiences in life; but how much heart does one have to have to not only put it on paper but to have it published. A release it must be. I wish Janell the very best in her future endeavors; because of her life experiences she will be successful in whatever she puts her heart into. My husband and I consider ourselves to be true fans of hers and look forward to her next read.

I judged this book by its cover and I knew it had to be good. I want to mention briefly that my heart goes out to Janell and her family especially Iris and Gabriel; they've witnessed so much. I heard about this book by word of mouth and will be introducing it to my sister2sister book club of 8 years. This book I can tell was written from the soul of a real woman because I felt her happiness, as well as her pain. You are a gift. I look forward to the day I see or hear about her coming to read on campus. This is truly an inspiration to not just me, but to us all.

It really could make it to Broadway , 10/25/2011
Reviewer: Ashley Sexton
I began reading this book and little did I know I would be entering a world unbeknownst to me. Everytime I opened this book to continue reading I got chill bumps over my body because I didn't know what to expect next. As wild and farfetched as it may sound I became the scared little African American girl that she was in Aunt Lois's room. The teenage parent, victim of domestic violence and even the victim of circumstance when she lost her job. Janell Ra where ever you are, here me; you are truly gifted-lady! This book will find it's way into the hands of a playwrite and to Broadway it will shine if Hollywood doesn't snatch it first. And if by chance you really do read your reviews I would welcome the chance to meet you in person. If you're ever in the Nashville, TN area you will always have a place to stay; look me up. You don't know me; but after reading your book, I believe it's safe to say that I know you. Thanks for sharing your life.

Reviewer: P.Schrum
I found this book to be very interesting. Reading scene by scene was like I was living it myself; I even cried because I felt what she felt. Who knew words, hell reading for that matter could be so captivating. Sure I've cried during plays, and movies but never while reading a book until now. I know this is a newly released book that was self published; so I'm not too sure about what media outlets Janell has; but when it gets into the right hands it's only a matter of time; I wonder if she even knows how bright she's about to shine!

This book is truly a gift that will continue to keep on giving. I envy Janell for her boldness. Putting her life into words is a sacrifice. I wish for her love, peace, and happiness for the upcoming year and all that shall follow. I pray that "A Clock Hangs in Hell." Finds it's way if it hasn't already into the hands of where it needs needs to be;"The World." Janell has a true gift in writing, she is a gift. If there was ever a book that allows you to enter another culture take on another person, to feel and be that person; this book is it. This book at times made me cramp up because the scenes were so vivid and life like. History has shown and proven to us that some of the Masters of the art of writing do not posess a college degree neither does Janell; but I have yet to read if she ever went back to finish her degree or not perhaps I'll read about it in her next book. Whatever the case maybe degree or no degree Janell is a true gem her gift will forever give her power.

I admit, I read the reviews for A Clock Hangs in Hell before I purchased it. I first thought I was spoiling the surprise by doing this and opt not to purchase it. But I went online and purchased it anyway. It wasn't until I had the actual book in my hands that I began to feel something magical; and when I cracked open it's pages and began to read it I then felt an immediate connection between both the writer and myself. Never in a million years will I be able to understand how is it that A Clock Hangs in Hell written by this unknown author could hold so much truth and power. I dream of someday being able to meet her in person if nothing more just to say, Thank you.

Awesome book. As a white woman I entered the world of a black woman; and because this writer so freely opened up her world I now have a new found respect for all African American women. I can't say enough about it. The way the author tied in music, life changing events such as the Challenger launch and the 9/11 attacks from the viewpoint of someone so simple as she was superb and made the book that much more authentic. It could be today, tomorrow, next week or next month even years; but I know one thing for sure this book is bound to be a Masterpiece; everyone can learn something from it. Everyone

Yes, it's a New Year a BRAND NEW YEAR and here I am still thinking about things that I read last. I finished A Clock Hangs in Hell on the Eve of the new year and words cannot express the feelings that I feel for this author who don't even know I exist. There I was toasting and welcoming in the new year laughing and smiling but yet all the while thinking about Janell Ra and what she must be doing. I'm no lunatic but this book opened me up in such away that I would love nothing more but to welcome Janell Ra with open arms into my life. She deserves the best because it's 2012 and after reading her life I feel it's fitting to say it's about time. After reading A Clock Hangs in Hell I felt that Janell Ra proved the old saying "The truth hurts" to be very true. I'm surprised that this is her first book because just reading it I felt the many talents that she posess. She's a gifted writer because she has the type of talent that Harvard or Yale could never teach. What she has a person is only born with and that is the art, the gift of touching, reaching people with words. There was nothing complicated at all about reading her book no fancy big words or anything but I was touched by her simplicity and I admire her for that. I want to read more from her; with this type of talent, I know I Will read more from her. I'm still Rajoicing!

Reviewer: Valerie
After reading A Clock Hangs in Hell I found myself just like past reviewers in "Ah for Ra." I absolutely love this woman for being so giving of her life for which she has sacrificed with hopes of changing as she stated at least the life "one" person; she will change the lives of many perhaps more than she will ever know. When I got to the end of A Clock Hangs in Hell I said to myself, It is what it is. She wrote this book not to d*mn her past; but in a sense to honor it, I can't say enough about it. May God continue to watch over her and her family, she truly has a purpose in life!

Reviewer: Curious George
As a male I right this review thinking how the world would be a better place if we had more people with a heart like Janell's. By the end of the book I sat patiently turning page after page waiting for her to blast Dane, Aunt Lois, Bishop and Florene too; but she didn't. By no means was I disappointed I was more taken by what she didn't do. For far too long black women have been given the loud mouth stereotype "talk to the hand-talk to the hand" if you know what I mean but Ms. Ra-Ms.Ra showed class and grace in how she handled every situation. As stated in previous reviews I too cried. I cried tears of joy because reading this book made me realize that there is hope after all; not just for me but for millions more all the janell ra's and all the Antwoine Fishers. We will be alright.

Let me first welcome Janell Ra to the world of Literary Arts. This book is amazingly crafted. The chapter headings alone such as, "A Quarter til, half past etc. is a work of a genius; it matches the title perfectly. From Eric Clapton to a rapper who goes by the name of Scarface this woman has the power of reaching everyone and she will. I admit I read the reviews before purchasing this book and I believe one reader said it best, "Her simplicity" sets her apart from all the others. Janell Ra is definitely a writer worth following, I will continue to reccomend this book to others and look forward to reading more from her.

  It's a SPARK that will start... , 02/15/2012
Reviewer: Kay
As seasons change people change and so do my choice of reading material. I consider myself a tough critic when it comes to reading books and why people write them in the first place. I am pleased to say that Janell Ra's "A Clock Hangs in Hell" is my Winter read and I've read it twice already; the first time taking personal notes. This is her life of course but having worked with many African American Women I can't help but think if they too have or had at some point in their life struggled with some of the same insecurities as Janell Ra. I'm far from prejudice but personally I've felt that the African American woman is a subject worth researching and in reading this book I feel that Janell Ra has started a SPARK! When she wrote about watching Florene use fade cream and calling cute little girls "China dolls" was very detailed and believable; and her growing up watching her own parents get so taken away by watching a young blue eyed blonde haired girl name Shirley Temple was remarkable. As I stated before this book is a SPARK that will have people talking for a very, very long time. I know I will.

Reviewer: A. Reader
I was hooked from the first sentence, "I wanted to pose nude." From that moment on this book became all I had imagined and more. The secrets she kept hidden, I felt as if she was a walking time bomb waiting to explode; and explode she did on paper and let it loose on the world. Some of her descriptive scenes where so life like I found myself saying aloud MY GOD! and her last line that read: "I've finally freed myself and for that I am an American." She had her Freedom, perhaps the same freedom that many of us will never know. What she is feeling right now I know is one that we all must envy; I know I do. I've squeezed this book in my hands and said finally someone had the guts! Pure Greatness! She will continue to be blessed!

To Janell Ra, you are simply marvelous hands down. The subtitle to your book "Sketches from the life of the most popular nobody." That alone was totally awesome. When you described how everyone has or knows someone who has been through the same ordeal, you are so right; because in their world they are nobodys, they think their the only one; but you THE MOST POPULAR NOBODY? This book will make you THE MOST POPULAR SOMEBODY! There are so many things good things I want to say about this book. I love it and will continue to recommend it to others. Thank you so very much from the bottom of my heart.

I give A Clock Hangs in Hell one of the highest praises. This book is a Godsend. All I can say is thank you so much. It proves once again that even with the trials of Job on you one still can survive. I wish you and your family nothing but the best.

  Bow down , 03/03/2012
Reviewer: Melanie
When I first overheard a discussion about A Clock Hangs in Hell it prompted me to go online and look for it and when I came across the reviews it gave me the push I needed to purchase it. I anxiously waited for it to come in the mail and the day it came I cradled it. Even after reading the reviews first I knew by reading myself I would have my own perceptions of the book. Let me first say this writer has a way with words; her simplicity will set her apart from all the rest. When I say she has a way with words by that I mean she made me as a reader become what she was; from the little black girl on up and through her adult years. I was captivated, mesmerized;I still am. I cried, boy did I cry. I'm lost for words. One person experiencing so much then releasing it to the world; she has to be at peace now and if I ever have the honor of meeting her in person I just may bow down and kiss her feet I thank her.

  A rare talent indeed , 03/03/2012
Reviewer: N. Schuman
It takes real talent to make something so spectacular out of sex abuse, domestic abuse; being a teen mom a high school dropout experiencing death of a love one and so much more. It's hard to believe that this is Janell Ra's debut book. Her talent is so rare and one to be reckoned with. Reading a Clock Hangs in Hell forced me to look at my own life and say maybe it's not so bad. Some of us tend to heckle and point a finger at those less fortunate when in all actuality we have no idea about their circumstances or what led them to where they are at this point in time. Janell Ra paints a portrait that is truly priceless.

What it means to sacrifice , 03/05/2012
Reviewer: A. Christian
I found joy while reading A Clock Hangs in Hell. My heart has been broken so many times and in reading this book I found that there is still a place of warmth in me. Each and every one of us have our own story in this life; but only very few have the guts to present it to the world. Janell Ra sacrificed herself Bishop, Florene, Aunt Lois, Dane her children and sacrificed it once more in putting words to her life and presenting it to the world. Much praise is due to her and many blessings is in store for her.

  Generations , 03/07/2012

Im up in age now and one of the things I admire about the younger generation is their willingness to speak whatever is on their mind. This Janell Ra has given her life story for the entire world to see with hopes of someone learning from it. I respect her for having the nerve, the audacity not only for writing her story but for publishing it too. In my much younger days I too once had the thought of writing my story which is somewhat like hers but no where near as painful; but now I'm old and it's taking me a while just to peck these keys on the computer. But this beautiful woman whose photo I see on the cover whose story once hid behind those eyes of hers has made it happen. She is free as a bird for writing such an awe inspiring memoir. God will continue to bless her for sure; Best wishes.

Janell Ra's memoir A Clock Hangs in Hell reads like a cross between The Color Purple, Tyler Perrys Diary of a Mad Black Woman and How Stella got her groove back. I absolutely love it and look forward to reading more of her work.

  Page 213! , 03/10/2012
Reviewer: Donna W.
Spectacular read! As Bishop once spoke of her as having an Old Soul. I see why, when I reached page 213 I cried so hard. I saw the movie Don't Play us Cheap as a teenager and when she quoted some of it's lyrics it broke me down. My cry was so deep because of things that I've faced and continue to face in my own life. Ms. Ra is gifted beyond measures she has the power to make a change to start a change life is too short.

  Powerful , 03/12/2012
Reviewer: Elouise
In A Clock Hangs in Hell Janell Ra reflects on how her child and adult pains and disappointments became the stepping stones that lead her down a path out of Hell. The talent that she possess, her way with words allowed her to inflict pain on her readers; perhaps the same pain she once felt. I was mesmerized because I saw myself as her. I found it hard to put the book down and when I had to as weird as it may sound I became her. The little girl confused by Aunt Lois. I became the confused teenage mom hiding the abuse from Dane. I felt the pain from Florene, Bishop; the loss of Aura and Tulsa and she's still here to share her story with the world. Awesome Read!
