Abstract:
After thirty years, as sheriff of Murdock County, Ronald Anderson is ready for retirement. Unfortunately there are no qualified candidates for his job. Three unlikely young people—a Mexican American, a woman waitress and the town playboy—are selected to be trained as sheriff’s deputies. One is destined to become the new sheriff. Which one will measure up?

The county has experienced few problems during Sheriff Anderson’s administration. Transgressors were generally admonished with “a good talking to”. Then in his last year, all hell breaks loose and talking is not enough.
