Abstract:
This book exemplifies how two people find each other in the midst of war, drugs, and failed relationships. From traveling in Europe with his military family, to cold and hot spying operations, Rudi Hausman faces turmoil on the home front when his wife contacts cancer. As a C-130 pilot in Vietnam, his last re-supply mission to a Special Forces Fire Base in the dangerous A Shau valley results in part of his crew getting wounded, and in the forced landing that follows, he and his co-pilot are seriously injured. He gets reclassified to non-flying duty in Special Intelligence..

I enjoyed the book immensely and liked the segue from character to character, also the excellent way Mr. Romero brought history into the plot. Just enough to be informative but not so much that it was boring. If you have ever been in the military, either as a career or a single term, you will immediately identify with the characters in Pearls From Many Seas and appreciate the words of the author. Spanning four wars, WWII through Korea, Vietnam and the Cold War through the eyes of men who fought as grunts and even silent warriors, one can appreciate the service of a veteran. The poem, "Here Lies a Silent Warrior" I first saw when I opened the book brought tears to my eyes, and I will request it to be read at my wake.

I started reading Herb's Book late in the afternoon on 18 October, discovered I couldn't stop reading till it was bed time, finished reading the book on 19 October 2011. Again I found I couldn't put the book down till I finished reading it. Herb did an outstanding job of starting with a U S Marine in the Pacific Theater during WW II, showing how he helped his parents upon returning to the United States, making the move to the Holmstead Area of Floridia, not only raising a family, but helping another family member from his home in Ohio with his new wife make a fresh start in the Holmstead Area also. Then taking one of this mans daughters show the problems she encountered in her teen years and early adult years and mixing this in with a Retired U S Air Force Lt Col who served with the United States Air Force Security Service also known as USAFSS and how the two met and finally married to complete the story. Having not only served in the U S Air Force for 21 years, but also having served with USAFSS from 1966 to 1981 I find it was very easy for me to relate to Herb's Story. Having served in both the Pacific and also in Turkey with USAFSS I found the way Herb expressed about not only the people, but the land and the history of these lands very intreresting. Having spent TDY time in Germany at the IG Farbin Building in Frankfurt, also spending a short amount of time in both Crete and Italy even helped to make the book all the more interesting. Would dare say the Herb's U S Military experience, but his up bringing also contributed to the book.
