In prose oblique where need be, but its meaning at all times crystalline, this novel leads us through a young woman’s terrors and deepest despair into an outcome of both earthly and supernatural joys.

Abstract:
In the language of fantasy and caricature JACINTA DOLORES JACINTA tells the tale of a pure and pretty child raised by her grandmother in Mexico, and of her love for the boy Tomas. At 12, upon the death of her mother in California, her father comes to take her to train her to be a dancer. At 14 he defiles her. At 16 she is his dancing partner in which they present themselves as husband and wife, and live as such. At 18 he is killed. Jacinta, knowing herself unfit for “everyday people”, sinks into a life of submission and repugnance, spiraling into madness replete with possession by oddly delineated demons. Tomas has his picaresque adventures in searching for her.
