Life lessons learned from dogs of my youth, scouting, and racing helped me earn the right to be the master of an exceptional Sheltie named Shempi. Travel with me and Shempi on that journey.

Abstract:
When I was young, I realized that accomplishments required hard work, devotion and passion. This book honors my boy scoutmaster, racing friends and dad who taught me how to fulfill those requirements. These successes are what I call “earning the right.”
This book tells the tales of Shempi and me during our travels over many miles and years. The lonely days and nights on the road would never have been possible had it not been for her companionship. Her antics and fondness of people were second to none. Earning the Right to be Called Her Master is reflected in the many experiences and friends we made.

Davie & Joyce,
I haven't been able to get you off my mind since I finished the
book. I just really need to seriously let you know this...
While reading it, I was overwhelmed with memories, and how fast
time really goes. My time with you both was short, but it was some of the most precious time I've spent in my life. You'll never know how truly dear you both are to me, and the impact you made on my life.
Davie's light hearted look at life helped me realize that I wasn't alone...I wasn't "the odd one"...there was another! Unknowingly he confirmed it was OK not to take things too serious, and to savor each moment we have here.
Kind and loving Joyce reminded me, and still does, of how important John is to me, and how lucky I am to have someone tolerate and love me as much as he does. (Davie will understand) The definition of "Champion" is Joyce...Not because of her closet full of trophies and jackets, but because of her unshaken soul.
Shempi will always be a priceless memory for me. When I think of her, as I do my Rusty, I will laugh and cry. I will always love her and when I see her at the Rainbow Bridge someday...I will do something I never had a chance to do when she was here...I will thank her for bringing me in to your lives.
I love you both,
Debbie

First, I want to thank Dave for letting us know he wrote this book.
Once I started I couldn't put it down. It made me cry, and it made me laugh. It also really makes one think about their own life too. We have so many memories growing up, we tend to forget about them or better yet, put them off to the side. Dave helped me think about many things we did as kids. We took a lot for granted. Life goes by way too fast.
I had the chance to meet Shempi. The part in the book where she walked into the body shop, (which was our shop by the way) and barked at the deer head hanging on the wall, then she wanted to run outside and find it's rear was the funniest thing we had ever seen a dog do. And she did it every time she came in. :)) I think after a while, she knew it was amusing to us, so she would perform for us, and we loved it!
You did a great job with this one Dave!! I hope you keep writing, you sure have the talent!
Thank You!...
You truley deserve the right! and Shempi knew it too!!!... :))
