Abstract:
The Overflowing Heart… is a collection of 28, black and white linocuts, each illustrating some portion of every chapter of the Gospel of Matthew. These are definitely not done in the usual style of “Sunday School” illustration. While all are “representational”, that is to say not abstract, the word that probably best describes them is expressionist. The artist has clearly been influenced by early 20th century expressionist woodcuts as well as other examples of the art of that period. However, the inspiration is clearly the Word of God and the intent is to draw the viewer’s attention to the simple truth of it. Each print has a short text with it describing the events or concepts presented.
