What courage it must have taken in 1949 to leave a secure small town, surrounded by loving family, and go into the unknown, knowing you did not have the money to return. The hardships that were encountered, the languages that had to be learned ... these challenges were met by two young people who, like many others of that era, were committed to one another.
The book is written as if the author was sitting in front of you telling you the story. There are eight 'life changing' events, each can be read in one sitting, and then there are short stories that go with every country where this family lived.
The most amazing thing is that the author learned English at 36, and at 83 she wrote a book, in English.
I think this book, by its content and form, will inspire readers to look to their own family history and see that it can be done simply and lovingly.
