“Shots Fired!” When these two simple, yet terrible, words are heard over the police radio everything else immediately stops! A police officer somewhere is in trouble, and needs help!

Abstract:
The 1970’s was the deadliest decade in modern law enforcement history and more police officers died than during any other decade of the 20th Century. In Fort Lauderdale, the “Venice of America,” violent crime was almost out of control and to stem this vicious tide the Fort Lauderdale Police Department created the Tactical Impact Unit. Written with all the drama and excitement of a novel, Badge 149 – ‘Shots Fired!’ tells the true story of this small group of men and of the daring exploits that made them so well-known and respected.

This book is a must read! Not just for those in law enforcement but those who want to get a "glimpse" at just how difficult the "JOB" can be. Jones depicts the right feelings and thoughts that happen when an officer is in a stressful situation and just serves as a reminder how much law enforcement does for our community. GREAT READING!!!!

Simply stated, this is not only required reading for past and present law enforcement, but for ANYONE who ever wondered just what lengths police officers had to go to in order to Protect and Serve. Thank you, Gary, for telling it just the way it was!

  True Depiction , 10/16/2006

Gary Jones wrote this book from a perspective few sew of police officers...we are human. Many books depict us as hardcore and uncaring. This books reveals the hard work, dedication, the emotions up and down, and the frustration and fears we all experience.

As Real As It Gets , 10/17/2006
Reviewer: Tom Woolsey
As a former member of the Tactical Impact Unit I have to say that this book put me right back into the incidents that Gary depicted in the chapters. The greatest and most dedicated group of people I have had the privilege of knowing. T.I.U. established guidelines for future special units in law enforcement.

Better understanding of policework , 12/19/2006
Reviewer: J. Power
Having read other books by authors who were police officers this is by far the best!! The detailed descriptions truly makes you feel like you are in the midst of the action. Having a member of my family in law enforcement I never really understod what it truly was like to be an officer until reading Badge 149. I now have a better understanding of an officer's life!

  IMPRESSED , 02/04/2007

My son gave me a copy of this book and I really enjoyed it so much, I read the entire book over a two day period. I'm a ninety year old mother of a retired officer, the grandmother of a grandson who is an officer, I come from a family with one hundred years of police service. I can assure you I've heard a life time of cop stories but I enjoyed this book so much. Captain Jones has a real gift as a story teller and kept my interest through out the entire book. My daughter also read the book and we are both looking forward to his next book. I enjoyed this book so much I purchased additional copies for family and friends

Wonderful piece of Literature, needed to be written as it existed and it has been. I know since I was there at most incidents. The story is all true, the way in which Gary depicts the events are both interesting, and many times funny, as I recall they were at times.. A great Cop and a equally great Author...

Gary has such a great way of telling the story. Since I participated in alot of it in Aerial 1, "Badge 149" was just like watching a video replay. The realism that is Gary's writing style, along with his insight, makes me hope that he writes several more. I never had any idea that Gary was so talented when it came to writing. If you want to know how it really happens from a first hand account, read the book. My review gives it 7 Stars, and 10 Thumbs up

  An Awesome Read! , 12/01/2011
Reviewer: Chief John Noling Retired
I've read a lot of books about police stories but this book kept my interest throughout. Once I got started reading I couldn't put this book down. I wish I had this book while I was working before I retired. All police officers need to read this book to learn from and even citizens to see how it really is out there on the streets and how dangerous it is.

  Bravo Badge 149 , 12/03/2011
Reviewer: Terry Wright
I read this book when it first came out & it's one of those that really grabs you from the first page! I joined FLPD during the TIU years & remember vividly how armed robberies were reduced for a while around Fort Lauderdale. Gary relates the stories with lively detail and shows the human side of police work too. Editing omissions distracting but a great read!

  Shots Fired - Officer Down , 12/13/2011
Reviewer: Diana Trappe McCrory
"SHOTS FIRED" - Officer Down! Words no one wants to think about, but as violent crime escalates in the early 70's, Ft. Lauderdale Police Dept. forms its Tactical Impact Unit, (T.I.U.). True life and death experiences of the men of this unit as told by one of its own - Gary P. Jones. As the book begins, Gary honors, by dedicating, the courageous men and women of law enforcement who have paid the ultimate price, and who have made the supreme sacrifice. Next, due to the dedication of this author, and his love of the job, he endorses the Law Enforcement Museum. He goes further to honor those fallen officers by donating a portion of all book sale profits to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, (NLEOMF). Now we begin the descriptive excitement of this author, and the small group of men that make up this Tactical Impact Unit. Gary was careful to pay great attention to detail as he takes us through drama, terror, fascination, and unbelievable imagination. As the reader travels from paragraph to paragraph wondering who will win and thinking, "what would I do"; along comes a "situation analysis"; this puts the reader in the situation and shall be answered before learning how the situation was really handled by the officers of this unit. And now, onto the next chapter. I found this book well written, in the first person; giving the reader a desire to read more and more, going from one exciting chapter, including the "what would you do" section, to the next. I felt compelled to boast the well respected author, Gary P. Jones on his accomplishment of Badge 149 "Shots Fired". His amazing account of real police work with the added "what would you do", which pulls the reader into the action.

  Excellent Book , 02/26/2012
Reviewer: Mary Bouck
Just finished reading this book and found it very interesting. A true depiction of what it's like to be a Police Officer. The hard work and tenacity it takes to finally get the "bad guy". The author draws the reader into the action, while at the same time, offering a glimpse of the "softer side" of an officer as husband, father, friend and co-worker. This book will be enjoyable to anyone in or out of law enforcement.

Low IQ Hispanics and , 04/30/2017
Reviewer: Dillanger
Low IQ Hispanics and blacks need someone to take care of them and look out for their interests. They know this, and that is why they are always looking to government to act as their protector. High IQ people don't need a protector. They can navigate the marketplace sueulssfccly on their own. The political problem is how to give low IQ people the protection they need in the marketplace without growing a corrupt thief state.
