Abstract:
The 1970’s was the deadliest decade in modern law enforcement history and more police officers died than during any other decade of the 20th Century. In Fort Lauderdale, the “Venice of America,” violent crime was almost out of control and to stem this vicious tide the Fort Lauderdale Police Department created the Tactical Impact Unit. Written with all the drama and excitement of a novel, Badge 149 – ‘Shots Fired!’ tells the true story of this small group of men and of the daring exploits that made them so well-known and respected.

"SHOTS FIRED" - Officer Down! Words no one wants to think about, but as violent crime escalates in the early 70's, Ft. Lauderdale Police Dept. forms its Tactical Impact Unit, (T.I.U.). True life and death experiences of the men of this unit as told by one of its own - Gary P. Jones.
As the book begins, Gary honors, by dedicating, the courageous men and women of law enforcement who have paid the ultimate price, and who have made the supreme sacrifice.
Next, due to the dedication of this author, and his love of the job, he endorses the Law Enforcement Museum. He goes further to honor those fallen officers by donating a portion of all book sale profits to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, (NLEOMF).
Now we begin the descriptive excitement of this author, and the small group of men that make up this Tactical Impact Unit. Gary was careful to pay great attention to detail as he takes us through drama, terror, fascination, and unbelievable imagination. As the reader travels from paragraph to paragraph wondering who will win and thinking, "what would I do"; along comes a "situation analysis"; this puts the reader in the situation and shall be answered before learning how the situation was really handled by the officers of this unit.
And now, onto the next chapter.
I found this book well written, in the first person; giving the reader a desire to read more and more, going from one exciting chapter, including the "what would you do" section, to the next.
I felt compelled to boast the well respected author, Gary P. Jones on his accomplishment of Badge 149 "Shots Fired". His amazing account of real police work with the added "what would you do", which pulls the reader into the action.
