When I requested this book, I expected a light novel describing the culture and environment in Brazil. Instead, I received a book of philosophical literature. Mr. Ely's novel is about one man's quest to make sense out of life and create a meaningful life in a world of absurdities. The novel reminds me of several recent international bestsellers---including one by Pascal Mercier, as well as the classical quest by Cervantes. It also reminds me of the writings of Italo Calvino. An excellent book for anyone who enjoys philosophical novels, but not beach reading!
