Abstract:
Victor Ignatyev, a Soviet lad trained to infiltrate the Catholic Church in America, is ordained ”Father Charles Hughes” in 1962. His is a tale of Central American guerrillas, papal assassination plots, and prostitute informers. He is romanced by senior KGB agent Marcia Mary Carvel, denounced by Father Richard Cronin as undermining the faith, and praised by Bishop Meggin for his “progressive” attitude. To become a Bishop himself and wield influence, he must trace a politically tortuous path between powerful modernist versus traditional factions, and the KGB. He is left with scars, but by 1983, is his own man.
