Abstract: A few years before the Soviet Union collapsed the CIA experimented with virtual reality hoping to develop new ways of penetrating KGB secrets. It was thought that if virtual realities in human form could be projected as images in space they would make useful agents, having the ability to walk through walls, and disappear. When the Agency succeeded in bringing them into being, functioning as people, they mounted an attempted take-over of the CIA. The Agency psychiatrist who discovered the conspiracy acted to block the take-over at the risk of his own life and sanity. This is his story.
