What is the Purpose of the Church?
The church is a building for public Christian worship. The word church is the English translation of the Greek word is “ekklesia” which is used in the New Testament which means “called out ones.” In the beginning God had created this world He had a purpose for us to be his holy people and we were chosen by Him to do great work according to scripture. For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession. Deuteronomy 7:6 (NIV) Then Jesus said: And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. Matthew 16:8 (NIV) This plan was already established and God had promised his mission for us and how we needed instruction to be able to live our lives on earth. The church is built on one Sprit which is the Holy Spirit which establishes the whole body of Christ.
Let us see what it says in the bible: For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 1 Corinthians 12:13 (NIV)
• The church is the body of Christ in which the members is to speak the truth in love as well as to grow in all aspects in Him which is Christ and there is a purpose for the members of the body of Christ. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. Ephesians 4:15-16 (NIV) • This is very purpose why we are members of the church is to carry out our duties because we are one body or unit to supply what is needed for our local church. We are all important and united in Christ to work together.
• God has given us special gifts to build the church. • Upon entering the church we are to do our part: 1. First openly confessing 2. Be baptize 3. Devoting ourselves to the teaching of the local assembly: with fellowship, communion, and prayer. • Members of the church were called to demonstrate the power of Christ in their own lives with the gifts God has placed in each one of us to do his work. • There are two purposes of the church, one is: The Great Commandment:
1. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with your soul and with all your mind- Matthew 22:37
2. Love your neighbor as yourself- Matthew 22:37-40
• The second one is The Great Commission: 1. Go and make disciples 2. Baptizing them 3. Teaching them to obey
There are two instructions for the church: • We are to worship- Psalms 34:3, Psalms 18:46, Psalms 99:5, Psalms 107:32 • We are to fellowship- Ephesians 2:19, Galatians 6:10, John 13:35 • We are to pray- 2 Corinthians 13:9, 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Ephesians 6:18 • We are to evangelize- Matthew 28:19-20, Acts 1:8 • We are to make disciples-Ephesians 4:12, 1 Colossians 1:28 • We are to be equip through ministry- 2 Timothy 4:5, Ephesians 4:12
Special Gifts of the Church
There are special gifts which are used to equip, build, and edify the body of Christ. In Ephesians 4:12-13 the bible says to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach the unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. In order for the local church to operate it needs people to sustain the operation of the church to run. We have to serve in our gifting so the church can obtain the level it needs to fulfill the mandate and vision of the visionary.
Who is the head of the church? Jesus Christ • Chief Shepherd- 1 Peter 5:4 • Good Shepherd- John 10:11, John 10:14
The Special Gifts are Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, and Teachers: Ephesians 4:11- And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers. (KJV)

Summary The church is a building for public worship. God knew that we needed a place for instruction, fellowship, and training so we could constantly learn about the things of God. God had equipped us for the edification of the local church of believers. The purpose of the church is to teach, equip, make disciples, pray, worship, and fellowship with the body of Christ. There were two mandates for the church and that is the Great Commandment and the Great Commission. According to John 14:12 we are to do greater works than Jesus when he was walking the earth.
