“Well, Hello there,” said Ben, surprised as he suddenly noticed the Old Man sitting on a large rock just across the grassy glade.
“Yes, Hello yourself,” laughed the Old Man. “We haven’t talked for a long, long time.”
…. “I do want to offer something to you,” said the Old Man, “something that I think you will like.”
“I’m all ears,” said Ben, anxious to know what was coming.
“How would you like to go back in Time,” he said, “back to the ancient Egyptians, when they were building their pyramids?”
“Wow! Could I do that?” asked Ben.
“Oh, yes,” replied the Old Man. “I have the capability of sending you back there and then returning you safely here to your home town.”
“My goodness,” exclaimed Ben. “That sounds very, very interesting. I’ve never visited the pyramids but I’ve often thought about them. I’ve often wondered how those ancient people, without modern tools, were able to put those heavy stones atop each other.”
“Well,” said the Old Man, sincerely, “if you’d like to go back to ancient Egypt and find out how they did it, I can make arrangements for you.”
The next Tuesday morning, right after breakfast, Ben picked up his walking stick, kissed his wife, and told her he was going for another walk in the woods. She understood and watched him go off. When he was out of the house it was much easier for her to do her housework.
He strode away from home with some determination in his step. After all, it isn’t every day that a man gets transported all the way back to ancient Egypt, to watch them build pyramids.
When he arrived at the clearing in the woods there sat the Old Man. “Are you all set and ready to go back to ancient Egypt?”
“Yes sir, yes I am,” replied Ben, enthusiastically and with a glow of adventure about him. “I trust you and I’m anxious to get started.”
“You’re ready to send me off right now?” asked Ben.
“Yes, if you feel ready,” answered the Old Man.
“And, I’ll be back here in a few hours?” he asked, a little bit nervously. “Yes,” replied the Old Man. “You’ll be back by lunch time, that is, your lunch time, a few hours from now. But you will have spent a day or two at the pyramids.”
“That is truly awesome!” exclaimed Ben. “My mind is made up and I’m ready to go.”
“Alright,” said the Old Man. “We’ll be off to ancient Egypt right away. Don’t worry about staying too long. They will know to send you back here in time for lunch, locally.”
“Whoopee!” exclaimed Ben. “Let’s go!”
“Alright,” said the Old Man. “Cross your legs. Put your arms behind your back, with your palms up. Now look left and then right and then look skyward. Keep looking skyward and start counting from ten down to one.”
Ben did as he was told and began counting – ten, nine, eight, seven, six—BOOM! He was gone!
He had no sense of traveling but he was startled when it happened. He opened his eyes and found himself standing at the edge of the desert in Giza, Egypt. He looked about and saw many workmen. They were in the process of building a huge pyramid.
A handsome, tall man, with a friendly smile, walked over to Ben and introduced himself.
“Hello, Ben,” said the young man, as he reached out to shake hands, “my name is Alpha. I am in charge of helping to build this great pyramid. I received a message a little while ago, telling me that you would arrive today - and here you are. You are in Giza, just west of Cairo, Egypt.”
“Yes,” answered Ben, trying to get his bearings, “I am here and somewhat surprised to be here. How did you know my name?”
“I was told the name of the man that was to appear,” laughed Alpha, “so I was ready to greet you.”
“I’m sure that the trip has been a surprise for you,” he added, with a warm smile. “The Old Man relayed your information while you were on the way. It works like a telegraph message. I got the information just a few moments ago.”
“Wow!” said Ben, still somewhat bewildered, “that has me a bit confused. Only a few moments ago, early in the morning near my home town, I was sitting on a rock in the woods, talking to the Old Man, and now, here I am in what I believe to be Egypt, looking at a pyramid being built, and being greeted by you.”
“Some of the things that my colleagues and I do,” smiled Alpha, “are surprising; and they may appear to be confusing and strange.”
“We have perfected various abilities and methods,” he added, “so that we can do what you might call impossible things. We can suspend gravity and we can teleport humans from one place to another. Those things are not impossible to us.”
“Just now,” he added, as he swept his arm towards the workers, “we are helping the Egyptians to build their Great Pyramid.
Alpha took Ben by the elbow and walked him a short distance, to the banks of the Nile River. Huge stones were being brought down river from the quarries. Each huge stone was being carried by several boats roped together.
“These stones,” said Alpha, “have traveled a long distance and now we need to transport them to the site, inland from the river bank, where the pyramid is being built.”
“My goodness,” exclaimed Ben. “Those stones are huge. How in the world can they be lifted and fitted in the place on the pyramid where they are intended to go?”
“We suspend gravity,” said Alpha. “And, we do more, much more,” he added.
