There is so much that rides on the doctrine of Christ’s righteousness. We are asked to devote our entire lives to Jesus, to live and die for him. To sacrifice our worldly goods and selfish desires. To place him above everything else, even our family, tribe and nation. To worship him, no less. If we have only one life to live, caution is certainly warranted, i.e., if the tusk of the warthog proves to be sharp, we want to know. Therefore, when we hear that in the Gospel according to John, Jesus has possibly told a lie of sorts, we feel compelled to investigate. As the apostle Paul says, "But test everything, hold fast to that what is good, abstain from every form of evil." (I Thessalonians 5:21-22) This is that test.
