My name is Millie Bates. I can remember seeing the soldiers come home from the Civil War. “The worst time was when the KKK killed Dan Black. We did not realize we had done anything wrong against the white people. The children were playing by the fire inside the house, when something was thrown at the wall. Dan jumped up to try and get out of the way. A KKK man had thrown something directly at me. I was afraid. I could not get up. Dan stuck his head out of the window , something was thrown at him and he landed on the floor. I crawled under the bed. I got the other children under it. We then looked out again. They then tromped inside the house. The KKK drug him out and hung him to a tree.”
