Vrim and Thummim are the first order of business in every verse in the Bible. Every verse in the Bible has its focus on either the Vrim or the Thummim or both. Vrim and Thummim is the plumbline of spirit and trueth.
The first reference in the Bible of Vrim and Thummim is found in Exodus 28:30. And thou shalt put in the breastplate of iudgement, the Vrim and the Thummim, and they shall bee vpon Aarons heart, when he goeth in before the Lord: and Aaron shall beare the iudgement of the children of Israel vpon his heart, before the Lord continually. Vrim and Thummim is at the very heart of the matter of the core things of life.
In Israel's economy there was nothing higher than the High Priest and nothing closer to God than the heart of the High Priest. The Vrim represents all things spiritual and Thummim represents all things in the natural or the physical. The Bible teaches that they represent Doctrine and Trueth. Iesus taught that the Father seeks worshippers who will worship him in spirit and in trueth.
John 4:23 24 But the houre commeth, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit, and in trueth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit, and they that worship him, must worship him in spirit, and in trueth.
First, we must note that many great trueths of the Bible, are hidden and kept in secret for the believer to search out. Proverbs 25:2 It is the glory of God to conceale a thing: but the honour of Kings is to search out a matter. Since believers are Kings and Priest, it is our duty to search out the matter. One of the master keys to the Bible concerning the secrets of God is found in Job 11: 6: And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisedome, that they are double to that which is: know therefore that God exacteth of thee lesse then thine iniquitie deserueth.
The value of Vrim and Thummim is that they help us to understand spiritual trueths in the Bible. We just quoted Job 11:6 which shows us that all things are double to that which is. For example, there is the first Adam and the last Adam, who is Christ. There is circumcision of the flesh and there is circumcision of the heart. There is the natural and there is the spiritual. Concerning Vrim and Thummim, this secret of Job 11:6 helps us to understand these two great concepts. Both Vrim and Thummim when translated into numbers through the English Language Chart, that is available on the back of most of my books, have the same numerical value. They are like twins. They both have a numerical value of 3 which relates them to light, life and God. Iesus is the light of the world, he is also the life of the world. God is the giver of both light and life. The very essence of existence is permeated with these two concepts, making Vrim and Thummim vital to our comprehension of the Holy Bible.
The spirit represents the Vrim and the trueth represents the Thummim. In the royall Law, or the perfect Law of libertie also known in the Scriptures as the Ten Commandements, we note that these Ten Commandements are divided into two divisions, yet they are one Law. The first four Commandements relate to the spiritual and the last six concern the natural or the physical. The first four relate to heaven and our heavenly Father while the last six concern the earth and the physical. Hence, the Ten Commandements hang on the two great Commandements which comand us to love God with all our heart, mind and soule and our neighbour as ourselves.
Matthew 22:36 40 Master, which is the great Commandement in the Law? Iesus sayd vnto him, Thou shalt loue the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soule, and with all thy minde. This is the first and great Commandement. And the second is like vnto it, Thou shalt loue thy neighbour as thy selfe. On these two Commandements hang all the Law and the Prophets.
As I reflect on my theological education, both in college and seminary, not once do I recall of ever hearing of these vital terms. Not once in all the sermons that I have ever heard do I recall the discussion of Vrim and Thummim during these same years. How can such an important concept be so overlooked? It is my prayer that you will be inspired by and learn of the rich treasures that the terms of Vrim and Thummim contain.
