It was two years later after the first novel was published – The Young Cowpuncher and the Blonde – that found Stew Perkins at the Chalmers Hotel in Breckridge, Kansas talking to Jesse, the owner.
“Sally told me to stop by and see you,” Stew commented. “Says there might be some tourists, or whatever their groups are called, who might be stopping here for overnight or a few days. Kemp has already put mattresses on the twelve bunks before he sold his ranch to Sally and me, but no sheets or blankets. We, that is, Sally said you would furnish such fittings when needed. I’m not in the habit of asking for something so I don’t know how you’d react. Frankly, I’d just as soon pay for such stuff, but as you know, we’re pretty short on cash at present. She thinks we could start off by getting only six coverings and then later, if needed, the other six. I’m finding out that once your daughter makes up her mind, things are going to happen; if not at once, then pretty soon.” He waited for answers.
Jesse smiled. “Oh, I knew that fact just as soon Sally was old enough to talk,” he replied. “Her mother, bless her, was actually the one to get her thinking along those lines as she was also one to get things done in a quick manner. My wife seemed to have a habit of doing things the right way the first time she tried something new. Sally seems to have acquired the same style. Why don’t you see Barker at the Best Merchant store and tell him I’ll be paying for the twelve coverings for you; that you only need six at present.” He reached for a pencil and wrote something upon a pad, and then glanced at his new son-in-law. “How’s Sally treating you since the marriage three months ago? Bed big enough to do your thrashing? If you know what I mean?”
Stew shrugged. “Gosh, Mr. Thomas, I know what you mean. We haven’t done any thrashing, so far. Sally figures if we slept together, we’d be having babies all over the place, twins; that is. She’s determined to have twins all the time since she’s one. She says we’re both in our middle twenties and she wants to get things settled at the ranch before being temporarily handicapped with a couple of tots in her, and then not being able to do things the way she’d like them to be, if tourists invaded our group when she is pregnant.”
Jesse studied Stew’s face. “Sounds to me you two aren’t too sociable yet.” He asked, wonder showing in his face.
“Huh!” Stew exclaimed. “We’re sociable all the time once the day’s duties are finalized. I’m relaxed, staring at the ceiling maybe thinking what I’m going to do the next day and Sally comes along and plunks herself into my lap and starts hugging me. Naturally, we end up in a kissing – well, guess you’d call it a kissing contest. Seeing who can last longer holding their breath. She sure has great kissing lips. Said mine throws her into high gear and that’s why no bed for me next to her for a while.” He glanced at the face near him.
“And, err,” His face had an embarrassed look as he continued speaking. “My thing, and you know what I’m referring to,” He pointed to his crotch. “It becomes so hard and long that I think it could pound nails, or if I was wearing rubber underwear instead of these woolies, my hard and hot thing would just touch the rubber and there would be a melting sound with plenty of hissing as the rubber melted. I have to lift Sally off me, saying I have to get a drink of cold water. She smiles and glances at my crotch and then nods. Then she sits in another chair, thank goodness. I get pretty hot all over for a while, and am glad she doesn’t pressure more. If she did I might tear her dress off and complete our kissing affairs in a different way. But I know she means well, even if she does tease me. She’s a great lady and sure glad she accepted me when we first met. We get along fine. Think we’re even startin’ to know what we’re each thinking sometimes.”
Jesse nodded. “I didn’t even know you, but I’d been told by Sally she thought she had finally found a great guy she’d like to know better. Thought eventually she’d marry him.”
Stew had many frowns upon his face. “But Mr. Thomas. The first day I met her I had stopped in to get a bath in the back of your hotel. Never had baths in a tub. Always in rivers or creeks. Great set up you have with those two tubs. My partner Brad said he had never been in a tub, just took showers at home where he lived.” He glanced at Jesse. “She even had the nerve to come in a shave me while I was in the tub with nothing on,” he groaned. “Sure felt embarrassed havin’ a woman shave me with nothing on. Had to cover my personals with a towel. She said her Pa was a doctor on the side, and she helped him with some patients; so she knew what I was hidin’ beneath the towel.”
