Tommy looked at Marissa. No way! Not even you could build an aircraft in your backyard!
She smiled. Its not going to be an airplane. Youll be getting there in your own shoes.
He looked at his running shoes. Youre going to program my shoes to fly?
Get real. Im going to program your shoes to teleport you to your grandparents house. Marissa straightened her round glasses.
That sounds worse than flying!
Dont worry. You probably wont feel a thing.
Im not sure . . . Tommy said in a tiny voice.
Im not going to teleport you yet. Im going to send a test subject first. Im so psyched. Ill keep working on the shoes until theyre perfect! Marissa kept clicking on the computer.
Mrs. Walsh came into the room. We have to go grocery shopping, Marissa.
Do we have to? the girl said.
Yes, we do. Youll see Tommy at school on Monday, Mrs. Walsh answered.
Cant I see him on Sunday after lunch?
No. Sunday is family day. Were going to go visit your cousins.
Tommy was disappointed. I cant wait until Monday to find out who Marissa is going to teleport in the shoes. And how will she do it?
Marissa said, See you on Monday.
Later, Tommy said to Marissa. He got up, nodded to Marissas mother and politely said, Goodbye, Mrs. Walsh. Then he left the room and went home.
