Tomorrow is almost here, thought Brandon. Tossing his warm jacket and the last few pieces of clothing into his suitcase, he tried to imagine the many adventures he might experience during the summer. He added his hand held video game, MP-3 player and two of his favorite books to complete the packing. Brandon hoped he wouldnt be too busy to play with them. That should do it, he said, as he zipped his bag and placed it by the front door.
Brandons family was gathered in the living room watching the latest Star Wars movie. His brothers Joshie and Jordon were fighting for the best seat on the couch next to their dad. Im turning in now so I will be rested and ready for tomorrow, Brandon told his parents as he kissed them good night.
That sounds like a good idea honey, Momma said, returning his kisses.
Good night, Daddy, whispered Brandon.
Good night, son. I love you. Try to get some rest.
Ill try, Brandon answered, but it is not going to be easy.
Returning to his room, Brandon knelt beside his bed. Folding his hands before him, he closed his eyes tightly, blocking out everything around him. Thank you, God, for your many blessings. Thank you for my family, my mom, my dad, Jordan, Joshua, John, Hannah and little Thomas. Oh yes, and especially for Nana and Pap-Paw, who are taking me on the trip tomorrow. Please protect us on our travels, In Jesus name I pray, Amen. Brandon crawled beneath the cool sheets. He turned this way, that way and then the other as he wrestled with his thoughts. I have to get to sleep, he told himself, but how can I when I can hardly wait until tomorrow morning. Somehow, after what seemed to be forever, he finally fell asleep.
Early the next morning, the alarm clock sounded and Brandon hopped out of bed, bright-eyed and excited. He could hear that his brothers were already stirring. He quickly dressed and ran to the kitchen to grab a blueberry Pop-tart and some milk to drink. Gulping it down as if it were his last meal, he mumbled through mouthfuls of Pop-tart, Thanks Mom, for allowing me to go on the trip.
Youre welcome dear. Dont forget to brush your teeth. his momma urged, They will be here any minute."
OK, Brandon answered, wiping his mouth with a napkin.
He ran immediately to the bathroom and brushed his teeth. Grinning wide in front of the mirror, he checked for any remaining bits of blueberry Pop-tart. Theyre all brushed mom! yelled Brandon, looking back to see her standing behind him at the bathroom door. Thanks again, Mom, for allowing me to go. Im, so excited.
I can see that, his Mom answered. I trust you will make us, and most especially the Lord, pleased with how you spend your summer.
Brandon hugged her tightly. I will Mamma. I promise.
Toot-toot, sounded a horn, toot-toot. Realizing his grandparents had arrived, Brandon quickly grabbed his backpack and suitcase and hurried outside.
Well hey partner, said Pap-Paw, with a big smile as he stepped out of the car, are you all set for your big summer?
You bet Pap-Paw! Brandon squealed with delight. I havent been able to think of anything else. Throwing his pack into the back seat of the car, he turned and hugged his Pap-Paw hello.
Taking the suitcase, Pap-Paw directed Brandons attention back toward his parents. Did you say goodbye to your family and give them all a big hug? You wont be seeing them for three months. Brandon ran back over to his family and gave each of his brothers, his sister Hannah and parents another big long hug. Brandons mom had tears in her eyes now, knowing she would miss him terribly.
Dont worry; Ill be just fine Mom. Nana and Pap-Paw will watch over me and keep me safe. I love you all and will miss you. Looking down to his brothers, Brandon urged, You be good now, brothers. Dont tease Hannah too much and listen to Mom and Dad. Jordan and Joshie nodded their heads while John grinned sheepishly. Brandon kissed his youngest brother, little Thomas, on the forehead.
OK, Brandon! Pap-Paw called out. Its time to hit the road. Jump in your seat and buckle up. With another quick hug for his mom, Brandon ran to the car, hopped into the back seat and fastened the seatbelt snugly around his waist. As Pap-Paw pulled away, Brandon continued to wave to his family until he could no longer see them in the distance.
