Hot Spot Fear of Falling
Hot Spots are: * having fallen; two out of three people will fall again within six months (according to statistics) * not telling your doctor about your fear of falling * limiting activity due to fear of falling * ignoring a fall * collapsing into your chair when sitting * statistics indicate that without intervention two out of three who fall will fall again within six months * difficulty standing up from sitting
Inactivity is not the answer to preventing falls. Inactivity can actually cause a fall!
A vicious circle develops > the fear of falling leads to inactivity > inactivity leads to increased weakness > weakness leads to a fall > the fall increases the fear of falling > the fear of falling leads to inactivity
Hot Spot Balance Without intervention balance starts to decline at age 40.
Hot Spot Loss of Strength Muscle strength starts to decrease after age 40. Without exercise fat replaces muscle.
Hot spots are: * poor nutrition and hydration * difficulty getting out of a chair/middle seat of a sofa * difficulty climbing a flight of stairs, leg muscles becoming tired * walking hesitantly sedentary life style
