Susan Brice Morgan is a twenty-four year old Registered Nurse at Cambridge Memorial hospital, who has an intriguing gift-one that has been passed down through her mothers bloodline. It is a gift of foresight and psychic power. Susan grows to understand and respect its mysterious presence, an aura.
Her first experience is during a horrendous traffic accident that claims the lives of her father and twin sister on their fifth birthday. It was difficult for Susan being a small child, to understand the pictures in her head had really happened.
Olivia Brice Morgan is Susans mother who is first-class, educated and savvy. Frank Morgan was Susans father. He was a blue collar hard working guy who worked and then owned an auto mechanic shop. He had a pleasant personality and liked by many.
Olivia owns her own successful brokerage firm. Her love for her husband Frank never died. They were sole mates. When Frank died in the accident he took part of her with him. She never felt comfortable moving on with her life and dating. She felt that there was no other man for her, than the husband she lost.
Victoria, Susans grandmother takes Susan into her confidence and explains the heritage of the Brice bloodline. The Brices are an old Puritan family from the area of Ipswich, a sleepy little town near Salem, Massachusetts. The craft was practiced by good and bad behind closed locked doors as dark hidden secretes. The Brice family for many generations practiced a beneficial or helpful craft for others or useful and self-serving.
Passing puberty, maturing into adulthood during the 1980s Susans perception and psychic abilities grow into impressive proportions. As the story unfolds we find Susan reporting to work. She exits the elevator and quickly responds to a code and the eventual death of a close patient. Susan was puzzled by this because this patient was admitted with hyperglycemia without a cardiac history. She questions everything and everyone is some attempt to finding the truth and ignoring what is right in front of her. Her aura.
The plot, hatched by her supposed friend and fellow nurse Marsha Stone, who is consumed by her intense jealously of Susans relationship with the surgical resident Trace Mathews who have always had a deep desire for each other. Marsha who once sampled a relationship with Trace now wants him back and will stop at nothing to get it, even if its murder.
A second patient of Susans becomes critically ill and a third patient falls victim to vengeance and dies under improbable circumstances. All of these unexplained events occur within one weeks period of time on Susans shift at the hospital. Her world quickly unravels as she is suspended from duty, shunned by her peers and co-workers and becomes the target of unthinkable suspicions.
Reese Michaels also a surgical resident and friend to Susan and Trace, finds himself seduced and accidentally entangled in Marshas vengeance and in the arms of death. Trace and Reese have been friends since medical school, they live together and although complete opposite personalities, they form quite the team in surgery. As the odd couple, Trace is Felix and Reese is the Oscar.
Susan makes reservations at the bungalows, a peaceful place near the beach. Trace surprises Susan on her weekend away where they rekindle their love for each other. It is there that they piece together the puzzle of unanswered questions and cause of death of the patients at Cambridge Memorial. Its a race against time to get back to the hospital to inform the proper authorities before more lives are taken.
Reese walks in on Marsha just as she is retrieving the evidence against her. He is shocked by her response and his actions against her.
