ANGELS A BITCH!
Dr. Charles Crawford summarized his troubled thoughts as he turned his sparkling red sports car into the parking garage below the Professional Office Tower.
He had long regretted the evening she had entered his life. Devil Woman! Oh, what a fool hed been. He had only himself to blame.
Alone that evening twelve years ago, he was attending a high society reception at the country club in honor of John Clarke, the wealthy new chairman of the board of Memorial Hospital.
He had a few drinks at the bar as he looked out over the crowd. In the background, the orchestra played soft, romantic music.
With a drink in his hand, he strolled out on the front porch to get away from the endless chatter. He leaned against the rail near the steps and watched the fountains spraying water into the night air.
A limousine drove up the circle. The driver opened her door, and Angel got out. She shifted her fur coat from her shoulders to her arms and came up the walkway.
Astonished by her beauty, he waited for her to pass by.
Good evening, she said as she paused at the top step. She smiled seductively as she looked him in the eye.
That moment they were alone. Still, he should have known. But the music was so romantic, and she so enticing in her stunning, low-cut gown.
She laughed wickedly, luring him on. His heart was gone. She was temptation. Like a fool, he fell for her then, hook, line, and sinker.
Once inside, he followed Angel at a distance as she went from room to room observing what the ladies of distinction were wearing. She was the new fashion writer for the citys largest newspaper.
Later that evening, he introduced himself and asked her for a date.
Im busy. She laughed softly as she turned and walked away. Ask me again. She looked back over her shoulder and smiled. I like chocolates. Ask me again.
Rejection was a bitter blow to the young physician, but he didnt heed the warning. He couldnt get her out of his mind.
It took him a month to gather enough courage to ask her out a second time. To his surprise, she accepted.
I thought you had lost interest, she said with an encouraging smile, and she nibbled on one of his chocolates.
He took her to dinner at an expensive restaurant and afterwards to a play at the new performing arts center. He wanted to ask her for a goodnight kiss, but he couldnt say the words.
He took her out again. This time she let him kiss her on the cheek at her apartment door but wouldnt let him come inside.
His courtship was elaborate. She had expensive tastes. Only the best was good enough for her. I like chocolates, she constantly reminded him.
After a year he proposed, and she accepted. She put him off another year before she would marry him. His medical practice had to build up so he could afford her elegance, and he had to buy a classic residence in a prestigious neighborhood.
Their country club wedding was a high society event. Cameramen and reporters were there from the local newspapers. It was a catered affair, and he willingly prepaid the expenses.
On his wedding night, he found out physical sex wasnt Angels ballgame. He was disappointed. She was a wife he could show off but not one he could enjoy.
During the early years of their marriage she kept their romantic moments to a minimum, allowing him attention only to keep him from straying. When she became pregnant for the second time, she decided to cut him off from physical sex completely. Two babies were all she wanted. There was no need to risk another pregnancy. It might ruin her youthful figure.
He met a young, single nurse at the hospital who relished his attention. She senses his unhappiness in his relationship with his wife. He resisted her for a while. But, out of spite, after a domestic fight, he yielded to her bedroom charms. This was the first of his many affairs.
Charles took his dates to dine in private corners of crowded restaurants and clubs. They watched plays and performances from secluded seats, and they ended these evenings romancing in expensive hotel rooms.
Then Angel learned he was having affairs with younger women. She tried to catch him, but he was too careful. She referred to his patients and nurses as those sluts you play with every day, but he refused to let her shame him or make him feel guilty.
Then Syndipore Chan came into his life. Syndi was his new chief nurse. She was the daughter of a Chinese-American military doctor and his Thailand-born wife. Syndi was an RN with specialized training in obstetrics and gynecology. She was unmarried, twenty-four years old, and intelligent. She had dark eyes, straight Black hair, and beautiful tan-brown skin.
Only dinner, nothing more, she said the first time he asked her out. Theres no future in my dating a married man.
He courted her for more than a year with roses to someone special from guess who. He slowly won her over, but not to bed. He was still a married man.
When Angel learned of her husbands feelings for Syndi, she was furious.
WHO DOES THAT SIAMESE CHINK WHORE THINK SHE IS? ILL FIX HER!
Not to be outdone, Angel acquired a boyfriend, a freshman university football player barely half her age. Charles came home one day and found them in bed.
Im glad you caught me, she laughed. Now you know I can be unfaithful, too.
Its ridiculous to continue this farce, he said, and he stomped out of the house.
He spent that night alone in a motel room. The next morning he went to see his attorney, Ralph Stone.
I want a divorce!
