Excerpt
From the first Chapter, Job e-Search...Now What? Okay, youre not a computer guru, but youve used the Internet and email at the office. Now, its personal. You must learn how to use the Internet to get your next job. But how do you set up a JobBot, in fact what is a JobBot? What rsum file formats are absolutely required? How do you upload your rsum to a job site without creating a non-downloadable file? What about employers questionnaires on their web sites? How do you send your rsum by email without trashing the formats? Do you need a high-speed Internet connection? In fact what hardware and software do you really need? These answers and more follow.
From the second chapter, Your %$^#& Campaign... As you surf the Internet, pay attention....Youll develop a feel from the Internet and your interviews about how to modify your rsum and your sales pitch...Youll feel it snow-balling just as I did and, like me, youll have more job offers than you can deal with. It will be a great feeling to get to pick a winner.
From the third chapter, Getting Organized: Phase I...Creating Job Titles to Shoot For How do you generate job titles?...A good analogy is playing dice. The six sides of one die are the first words of the job title, another die the second word, etc. Shake them up, throw them down, and write the results in your list. Amazing what you can create..I parleyed a single job title into an impressive list centered around 1) proposal writing (51.1% of submissions and 38.2% of job types)...In all, I submitted rsums for 217 different job titles.
From the fourth chapter, Stuff Youre Gonna Need: Phase II... 4. Written answers to tough questions. Ive included an appendix with questions youll need to take time and carefully write out exactly what you would say to a prospective employer.... Example: describe a mistake you made and how you overcame it. See? On the one hand, the employer is asking you to reveal a mistake you made.... he wants you to describe it in the context of a creative solution...Your cell phone and landline need an answering capability when youre away on an in-face interview...or when youre taking another call. I dont recommend Call Waiting for this latter scenario because a prospective employer doesnt want interruptions once they have you on the line. Wouldnt it be ducky if you lost a job opportunity because of an aluminum siding salesman? Dont count on Caller ID to resolve friend or foe; it wont most of the time.
From the fifth chapter, Launching Your Attack: Phase III... Tips: User ID & Password: 1. Always go for 8 characters for a password, something easy to remember. 2. Never repeat a letter or number more than once (no 11112222 games)...5. Never use punctuation in a Password; okay for a User ID....
Regarding employer questionnaires on their web sites. I had to fill out several...Problem? Space. Imagine someone asking you to describe the essence of the 700-plus page novel, War and Peace by Tolstoy...in ten words or less (I liked Woody Allens answer best: Its about Russia)...
How to Use Job Sites to Your Advantage... Its straightforward, right? Log in, put in a job title, select a location, click on Get My Jobs, and start shotgunning rsums to every employer and his dog. Dont you wish...Okay, heres the deal. When you sign up on a job site you are creating an account, registering a user ID and password, and finally posting at least one rsum on the job site. Thats a minimum. Maybe you also do a JobBot as well...
(About searching job sites for jobs.)... I found the best way...is to use no more than two key words in the title, staying mostly with single word identifiers like marketing, writer, communications, and proposal....adding the word manager at the end of a job title increased the number of off-target hits significantly. Youd pull in every job that had manager in its title...(like)...pharmacy manager. Weird.
From chapter six, Killer e-Mail Tips...Signature: Yours... Regardless of your e-mail software...you can set up a signature which is attached automatically to every e-mail you send. It contains...name, address, phone/fax number(s), cell phone, e-mail address, and personal web site if you have one. Any more than that clutters the e-mail...In MS Outlook Express, go to Tools, Options, and select the Signature tab...
Let the job site send the rsum you posted, or do it yourself?... When you surf the job sites and find a few interesting opportunities, you have a choice to make...After all, isnt that why you posted a rsum on those job sites? Almost, but you should always go the extra mile...
From the seventh chapter, YOUR THERMONUCLEAR WMD*: www.your_name.com Your Own Web Site...Cooool!...For me, this is the ultimate killer, thermonuclear, Job e-Search WMD (Weapon of Mass Distribution). Dont be intimidated by what at first seems tough technology; you can do it...Phone interviews go well when the prospective employer starts off by saying, Saw your web site...I particularly liked... Theyve almost made a decision...I got several in-person interviews because of my web site; the employers had already checked me out and decided they needed to see me first hand. I had to cancel other in-person interviews because Id accepted a position...
From the Appendix on Rsums STANDING OUT IS THE GOAL OF YOUR RSUM...First, regardless of how many degrees or years of experience you have, a two-page rsum is the most youll e-mail. Why? Time (your prospective employers). With 500 or more rsums submitted per job, reviewers havent the time to wade through ten pages...Have a one-pager and a two-pager ready for each rsum... * Weapon of Mass Distribution
