Two prospectors came to the mouth of a box canyon. The two prospectors walked towards the town. Paul noticed some material that looked like pieces of leather. He stopped and looked around in the area of the debris. He found something shinning in the grass next to a piece of the bag. He picked it up.
"Say, Bill, look what I found! A gold nugget! I wonder if it came from this place. What is it doing out here?"
"I don't know Paul. Do you see any more lying around?"
"Yes! There are three more in the same are of the old bag. Let's go into the town and see what else we can find and maybe where these gold nuggets came from."
As they entered the town, they noticed that all the buildings had fallen down, except the saloon. In what used to be the Town Square was a pole with strange markings on it.
"Bill can you make out what kind of marking are on the pole?"
"No I can not Paul. It does look like some Indian symbols I have seen in the past. This one almost looks like a warning of some kind. But, I don't think it is one. Well, anyway, we might as well look around this old place before we move on. Hey, Paul! Isn't that an entrance to a mine or something on the north canyon wall?"
"I think you are right, Bill. This could be the place that I heard some people talking about an old legend passed down through the years. The story is that the town was evil and was destroyed because they were taking the sun out of the ground. Any way, I think that is how the Indian legend goes."
"Let's go over and check it out. Maybe we will strike it rich," laughed Bill as he and Paul walked towards the mine.
They checked around the old buildings by the entrance. They could not find any thing by the entrance that would give them more information about the mine. The mine entrance was sealed with large rocks and other debris.
"What do you think, Paul? Could we move some of these rocks and get into the mine? Asked Bill?
"It is worth a try."
After three hours of hard work they had a small opening. It was just large enough to crawl through into the mine.
Inside, they used their flashlights to check the mine. Bill noticed a dim blue glow on the floor of the mine. He walked over and pick up what looked like an amulet.
"Say, Paul, have you every seen anything like this before?"
"No I haven't."
"Oh well, it is not gold." Bill threw amulet into the corner and walked back to where Paul standing.
"There must be another way we can get down to the other levels. I'm sure of it. Let's try to see if we can find an air shaft or some other way down," said Paul.
As they checked the main level for airshafts or another way down, Bill found what appeared to be airshaft.
"It looks like the air shafts are sealed. Maybe we can clear one of the airshafts that goes down to another level, Said Bill.
They worked for over two hours. They removed rocks and other debris from the airshaft. Finally there was enough room to enter the airshaft. It was a tight fit but they manage to get into the shaft. As they worked their way down the shaft, they came to the second level. They checked the walls for signs of gold, but nothing showed up.
"Say, Bill, that looks like a ladder over there. It should go down to the next level."
"Let's give it a try, Paul. We have nothing to lose. All we have to do is find the gold and we will be rich beyond our dreams!"
On the third level, a red glow appeared and laughter filled the mineshaft.
"Paul, did you heard that? It sounded like someone laughing."
"Bill, you are letting your imagination get the better of you. It was the wind moving through these old tunnels. Come on. Let's see if we can find some gold."
The two men started down the tunnel. Both thought of the riches that would await them. James appeared in front of the two miners.
"Howdy, boys! Are you looking for something?"
Paul and Bill stopped dead in their tracks.
"Who in the hell are you and where did you come from?" asked Paul.
James just laughed.
"You, boys, are in my world now. If you want any thing, you must deal with me!"
Both Paul and Bill looked at each other, turned and started to run back towards the ladder.
"Let's get the hell out of here Paul!" yelled Bill.
"Running will not do you any good boys. Your souls are mine now and for eternity!" laughed James.
