Abstract:

What I liked best about this book was the feeling that I had lived through so many similar emotions. Hunsaker has a rare talent for expressing the inner emotions of young women, and their struggles to know themselves. In this novel, she recreates the exciting but uncertain world of the 1970's traveling rock bands. Most stimulating are the references to specific music that was important and loved by all who grew up during that era. "Different Drummer" could be used to describe each of the main characters in some way. Susie is a complex character who lives for her music and dancing, and finds herself drawn to those who create music. That love within her draws them to her as well... so much that the reader is torn between which of these musicians would be best for Susie. This kind of personal involvement with the characters and their relationships is what makes for a great novel that is hard to put down. And we are eagerly waiting for the sequel to find out if Susie's choice was the best one to fulfill her destiny. We know that, whatever happens to her life, it will be filled with music. And for those of us who also live for music, her story becomes our own.

I had a very hard time putting this book down. The story line is deeply interesting especially to those of us who grew up in that era. The characters are thoughtfully described so the reader can almost see them and know who they are. A must read!!

I started reading and couldn't put it down! Once you are introduced to the characters you begin a ride that you never want to end. You struggle with them as they prepare for the tour, you're with them on the bus, at rehearsal, backstage, on stage, it's as though you are actually there. You can practically hear the music. You also relate to the characters and their hopes and dreams. You'll laugh with them, cry with them, and at times, even breathe with them! It's a must read if you love music!

The characters in this story are so well defined, that as I read the story, they came to feel like they were my group of friends. I was rooting for this couple to get together, or that couple to stay together, and wanting to communicate with the characters. I didn't want to put the book down until I found out what they were going to do about one situation or another. Now, I'm waiting for the sequel. It is an engrossing, entertaining read, so curl up with a cup of coffee, and enjoy!
