Breathe Better, Live in Wellness: Winning Your Battle Over Shortness of Breath, by Jane M. Martin is the second edition of her first edition, formerly titled Inspirations: Stories of Breathing Better and Living Well. Breathe Better has been restructured, having a section for each of several lung disorders and life issues, making this book more reader friendly. Jane has also added “billboard” like boxes with definitions, hints, and links corresponding with each specific subject matter. This helps readers quickly find resources so they can research the topics of greatest concern to them. Good, solid information is always most helpful, but moreover, Breathe Better includes additional stories and even more assurance for those people with breathing problems. Jane’s sensitivity and concern for those with COPD and other chronic lung diseases shines forth from cover to cover. Filled with encouragement and hope shared through stories of everyday people coping with pulmonary disease, this book is a must read for not only those experiencing problems, but also for friends and family. I highly recommend this book.

I first received a copy of Breathe Better, Live in Wellness at the COPD Coalition Conference in 2003. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened it and started to read stories from various individuals that suffered from many different forms of lung disease. I was amazed at how positive their stories were and how they managed to deal with it from day to day. Being a sufferer of COPD myself, it was very uplifting to read about others with their own words. This book would be a perfect book for any lung disease support group. Jane's book is well written and is a must read for anyone with lung disease.

Living well with COPD , 06/10/2005

Jane wrote her book as though she was coming over to relay some information on mutual friends. The stories were immediately relevant to my COPD life and those I know from our support group. The intermixing of related definitions and resource links really helped the flow of reading making it hard to put the book down as you wanted to learn more and more with each passing page and story. It's an excellent testament that COPD is not an imediate death sentence but just a change of pace in one's life style and that a positive attitude is a very good medicine.

Living Day to Day with Lung Disease , 06/28/2005

I first learned of the book, "Breathe Better, Live in Wellness" by Jane Martin from the COPD caregivers listserv that I connected to a couple of years ago when my husband's COPD got worse. I ordered the book and read it from cover to cover. Then I asked the author if she would be able to speak at our Better Breathers Group meeting which she graciously agreed to do. This book was an incredible help both to my husband and myself. It gave my husband hope to continue to live each day with this devastating disease. The stories also helped me in being his caregiver. Jane Martin is a wonderful storyteller both in her book and her presentation. I would highly recommend this book to any person dealing with lung disease as well as to their family and friends.

LIVING with Chronic Lung Disease , 02/13/2012

I wish I had known about Jane Martin’s book when I was initially diagnosed with COPD some 10 years ago. I knew nothing about COPD, only that all of a sudden I was being put on nocturnal oxygen, and oxygen for exertion, and meds that I’d never heard of before. I was scared. I had no idea of how I was going to deal with everything. The book is grouped into sections dealing with various chronic lung diseases, and each chapter within a section is a story of an individual patient’s life – how they live with and deal with their lung disease. As a COPD patient who also has asthma, I gravitated to those two sections first, but then continued to read the sections on Alpha-1, Interstitial Lung Disease and Pulmonary Fibrosis because I wanted to meet the patients who were sharing their stories and how they cope with their chronic lung disease. The entire book is filled with inspiring life stories from patients who have decided to live the best life possible, in spite of chronic lung disease. I thank them for sharing their stories with Jane!! I recommend this book for all patients with chronic lung disease and their caregivers and family members.
