Abstract:
London was in turmoil. There had been a number of apparently motiveless murders. Scotland Yard and local police gave the impression that they had no inkling of how to proceed. Citizens looked towards the government but the authorities were not providing the leadership that they should. Many believed a number of highly placed individuals were implicated in the crimes. Newspapers were hindering any serious investigation by encouraging an almost circus-like atmosphere to prevail. It was not probable that Jim Grottenbottom and Nate Hortinbey were going to improve the situation and bring an end to the career of Jack the Ripper.
