Abstract:
Young Joseph dreams of bringing his family to America where there is freedom and opportunity for all.

Upon Papa’s sudden death, Joseph, the eldest of six siblings, leaves school at age fourteen. Joseph runs the family barbershop and takes Papa’s place in the Klezmer Band. .

Before being drafted into the Russian Army, Joseph sends his brother Maurice to America. Maurice gives his solemn promise to send for Joseph one day. Together, they will reunite the family in America. .

Heads will nod and hearts will race as readers experience this immigrant saga. We marvel at how Joseph’s violin saves his life.
