BEYOND ME
Secrets of a Practical Mystic
Excerpt
"It is only now that I can even speak about these things and put words to them," Ruby said, her dark eyes shimmering with mystery. "At the time of my transformation, I had no guide or book to tell me what it meant.
"Now I want to tell others that there is a lot more to life than we know, to help them get in touch with the dimension and resources of spirit so they can live better. I am not a guru or a guide and I am not preaching some religion or ritual here. I just give people a short-cut to getting in touch with their own energy, with a new vibration."
I knew what she meant. For nearly three years, Ruby and I had worked together, helping people on their journeys of transformation. It was from the dimension of spirit that Ruby drew many of her resources. She was able to enter that dimension and connect with energy fields that do not have a physical form. "My purpose is to awaken people to their original state," she often said. Awakening the divine within, she called it.
The focus of our work together was past-life consciousness. During that time, we saw several hundred clients. What I witnessed challenged everything I had been taught and trained to do as a psychologist. My experience with Ruby changed my understanding of the issues and people I normally handled and forced me to question the traditional way of doing therapy. It helped me transcend the way I dealt with clients and integrate the dimension of spirit into my own practice.
As Ruby said, "No one will witness what you have witnessed. This is something new. You must share your journey and the journey of our clients with others. The time is right."
Her words sent shivers up my back. I knew I would have to risk personal and professional exposure to share my story. For many years I had tried to stay afloat in a sea of turbulent emotions and dramatic experiences. When I couldn't bear the pain any longer, I had embarked on a quest for truth - to find better way for my family, my clients and myself.
I had always looked for teachers and explored many therapeutic tools and techniques. However, they were never enough. Working with Ruby, I discovered so much more - insight beyond anything I could have imagined. The more I tuned into my inner guidance system, honed my intuitive abilities and expanded my consciousness, the more I touched the dimension of spirit. Accessing the resources of that dimension eventually became second nature and effortless. I found I could use my awareness and heightened perception at will.
What I experienced while working with Ruby transformed me. No longer was I a victim of life experiences. I was released from the chaos of my experience - whether it was in my relationships, family, health, or work. Along the way, I realized that all of us must journey along our own path in our own time.
Looking back, it seems as though I was simply a metaphor for all those who travel this path, no more or less than any other human with strengths and vulnerabilities.
From Chapter 3 of Beyond Me
When Ruby and I first joined forces, we didn't know what we were supposed to do or why. Even as we began working together with clients, neither of us could predict the next step. Every day was different and something new was revealed - it was pure adventure. Ruby and I simply journeyed into deeper dimensions of awareness....
Over the course of three years, we saw several hundred clients. Although each case was different, the clients came in clusters. First came the clients with relationship issues, followed by a large contingent of people with mind-and -body concerns. Next came people with questions about meaning and purpose in their lives. During our sessions, deeper truths were revealed in each of these areas. The clients became our instruments of learning.
Whenever we stopped to review our journey, Ruby's large black eyes would fill with shifting stars. "They all come wanting the cup. What they really want is the water. And that's what I give them - the living water," she would say in a mystical voice that carried a unique force.
I had always wanted the best for my clients and Ruby was able to uncover aspects that I couldn't reach. "There is a lot more than what they are telling you," she said. "You only see their symptoms - there is something more that is locked in the psyche." Ruby moved right to the core. Then she went on to help the client release their pain, resolve their issues and connect with their divine guidance. She got results fast and my clients confirmed the truth of her insight.
Ruby had no patience for conventional methods. "Therapists should lead their clients," she said. "They should get paid for leading people into harmony. If people just want to talk, they might as well talk to a friend - it costs less money and time."
In each session, Ruby was the director. She asked very few questions, usually only the client's name and birth date. Is she using astrology or numerology? I speculated. I soon discovered she knew nothing of those techniques.
"What do you want?" she asked each client. Then she scribbled some pictures or words on a notepad. "And when you get it, what are you going to do with it?" Clients were usually caught off guard by this question. Then Ruby immediately launched into her reading of the situation. Often she revealed the secrets of the person's past and present.
"When they come to me for healing," she said, "it is my duty to go into every nook and cranny of their lives. It is my job to pull all the bits and pieces together. It is my responsibility because I have the gift of insight."
